Summary:
Vonage is a relatively new company, founded in 2001. In that short period of time however, they have become practically the standard in internet phone service in the consumer market, at least to the mainstream, non-techy crowd. That is due in part to the massive advertising campaigns they have been running via media, print, online, flyers, and direct mail.

They know how to market, that is for sure. But, do they know internet telephony? The answer is: a definitive yes. CNET rated Vonage as one of only two companies that equaled or surpassed the sound quality available with landline phone service. Vonage has won numerous awards by PC Magazine, TMC, and a long list of others including institutions of higher learning and industry rating authorities.

One word of caution: For all of the great things Vonage has done, or has going for them, many industry analysts are baffled at how this company can possibly sustain their current business model for much longer. It has been estimated that Vonage spends upwards of $200 per new customer, or higher, in advertising alone. Also, it is known that Vonage has accrued a considerable amount of debt in the process of getting where they are today, and some insiders say that debt will be called due very soon (as in, by the end of 2008.) The implication is, once that occurs; there is a good chance of re-organization, or outright bankruptcy.
Edit: As of October 2008, Vonage has successfully refinanced it's debt, and avoided bankruptcy. You can read more about it at this press release about Vonage's Refinance.
